Getting to the root of Parkinson’s

Jump to Contents

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a chronic, progressive neurodegenerative disorder marked by motor symptoms such as tremor, rigidity, and bradykinesia, along with significant non-motor manifestations that impair quality of life. In India, PD is an emerging public health challenge due to population ageing and increased life expectancy, with prevalence estimates varying widely across regions and communities. Studies (1,2,3) suggest that the mean age of onset in Indian patients is lower than in Western populations, indicating possible genetic and environmental influences. India accounts for nearly 10% of the global PD burden, yet nationwide epidemiological data remain limited, and disparities persist in awareness, diagnosis, and access to specialised care, particularly in rural areas. Strengthening population-based research and healthcare infrastructure is essential to address the growing impact of PD in the Indian context.

These infographics visually distills current research on PD, tracing its molecular roots and mechanisms. It combines scientific rigour with accessible design to engage both specialists and general readers.
